Boy, 10, mutilated for body partsBy Michael Dynes, JohannesburgAugust 05, 2004
A SOUTH African boy aged 10 was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday after being mutilated to provide human body parts for the growing trade in muti, or African traditional medicine.Sello Chokoe, a herd-boy from a village in the rural province of Limpopo, lost a hand, an ear and his genitals in the attack.
He was searching for cattle in the mountains near his home when he was hit on the head with a club and knocked unconscious. He awoke to find himself bleeding heavily from his head, arm and groin. A local woman collecting firewood alerted the authorities.
The attack is the latest in a series of assaults in the region in recent months.
"The motive has not been established," local police spokesman Mohale Ramatseba said

"But we have not ruled out the prospect it could be related to muti."
Arrests were expected soon after local villagers inundated police with information on the potential culprits, Mr Ramatseba said.
"Muti murders" -- killings for body parts that some locals believe can make powerful medicine -- are frequent in South Africa.
Gerard Labuschagne, the head of South Africa's muti murder investigation unit, the only investigative force in the world specialising in ritual killing, believes there are more than 300 such murders every year.
