POWER, OWN YOUR POWER, EVERY STORM BRINGS A FRESH NEW BEGINNING.

A MAN from Papua New Guinea blew himself up when he accidentally pulled the pin of a hand grenade tucked into his waistband as he showed the device off to a friend, it was reported Thursday.

PNG police said Webster Mark, aged in his mid 20s, died instantly when the grenade exploded at about 5.30pm Wednesday at the back of the restaurant where he worked as a chef in the capital Port Moresby.

The restaurant's owner, Lama Eke, told the Post-Courier newspaper that Mark was attempting to take the grenade from his waistband to show a colleague when he accidentally pulled the pin.

Both his hands were blown off and he suffered massive stomach wounds, the report said, while Eke said Mark's colleague was thrown more than a metre by the force of the blast. He is in a critical condition in hospital with shrapnel wounds.

Neighbouring shopkeeper Michael Siune told the newspaper the explosion was heard all around the Boroko shopping area where Mark worked and that many thought it was a gas cylinder exploding.

"It was a very stupid thing to do and he probably deserved it," Port Moresby police commander Tony Wagambie told Australian Associated Press.

A proliferation of illegal weapons in PNG is widely regarded as a major contributor to a breakdown of law and order in the troubled nation.

Port Moresby is regularly ranked among the world's most dangerous cities.
