New laws to crack down on jurorsSeptember 02, 2004
JURORS who carry out their own investigations during trials could face two years jail under new laws to be introduced by the NSW Government.Attorney-General Bob Debus today announced the new laws would crack down on renegade jurors who acted like amateur detectives during trials.
"The actions of a few renegade jurors have jeopardised the trial process," Mr Debus told parliament today.
"Put simply, there is no room for a Colombo-type character in the jury room ... watching a few episodes of Blue Heelers doesn't equip a juror to act as an amateur detective.
"The Government will therefore be proceeding with the introduction of a new offence to prohibit jurors from conducting their own inquiries during trial proceedings.

"This offence will carry a maximum penalty of two years (jail)."
The issue came to a head in May, when two Sydney teenagers had rape convictions overturned after two jurors conducted their own crime scene experiments in breach of court rules.
Mr Debus said the Jury Act also would be amended to make it an offence to solicit information from or to harass jurors, carrying a maximum penalty of seven years' jail.
Under current laws, offences apply only to the deliberations of a jury.
The new measures were based on recommendations by Justice James Wood and the Jury Taskforce, Mr Debus said.
The amendments would be made to the Jury Act during this session, a spokesman for Mr Debus said.
