This type of cheque book journalism has to be stopped. Its gone on for far too long and not just with magazines, its news programs too. Talk about a slap in the face for the victims, the government must make new legislation in the banning of this profiteering. I applaud the government in creating the new legislation preventing those in jail from profiting from book deals/movie deals. If they can do this then why not bring in legislation regarding this???

RAPIST David Leslie Sims has declared himself bankrupt - dashing his victim's hopes for justice through civil compensation.Sims, who has now lost his job, is officially penniless despite his fiancee Alexandra "Zandra" Kilpatrick telling her story to a women's magazine.
Industry sources estimate she would have been paid up to $20,000 for the double-page spread in New Idea.
She told the magazine that the double rapist treated her "like a princess" and helped restore her self-esteem after she was raped as a 17-year-old.
Her comments have sparked an outraged response from Sims' victim and her supporters.

"Sigrid", 22, who has been fighting for justice since the courts let her attacker off with a wholly suspended jail term, was devastated.
"It's absolutely ludicrous that they're going to profit from this and that she is trying to drum up support and sympathy for a man who has been convicted of rape," she said.
"It's sickening that she is doing it even though she was raped when she was younger. It's uncouth," she said.
Sigrid said the article was a crushing blow to her attempts to rebuild her life and slammed the publication for failing to consult her.
Crime Victims' Support Association president Noel McNamara said it was cruel.
"This is making her relive the trauma all over again," he said.
Sims, 36, was convicted on two counts of rape, one of indecent assault and another of aggravated burglary for invading Sigrid's unit and attacking her while he was drunk last November.
In a case that sparked public outcry, Sims' 33-month jail term was wholly suspended.
His only punishment was to serve 38 days remanded in custody during the course of his court proceedings. The Court of Appeal rejected the push to overturn his sentence.
Sigrid had planned to sue her attacker in a final bid for justice, but his financial status has raised strong doubts over whether it can proceed.
Sims filed for bankruptcy on April 29 last year, owing almost $60,000 to his bank, the tax office and his superannuation fund.
At that time, he had $17,265 in his Host super fund and a 1974 model Mercedes valued at $5000.
His affairs are now being managed by the Official Trustee in Bankruptcy - the public administrator.
Sigrid said she was not interested in money, but felt Sims needed to be punished adequately for his crimes.
"It feels weird because it's so ridiculous to think that money can do anything about it," she said.
"To me, it's just about justice and getting a legal decision in my favour."
A spokeswoman for New Idea, Kylie Field, said it was the magazine's policy not to comment on payment for interviews.
Sims' father, Les Sims, said his son had lost his job at Cheltenham's Royal Oak hotel three weeks ago.
"He was told to go, sign a piece of paper and leave and say that you weren't asked (to leave)," he said.
"It's because of harassment from you people (the media)."
Les Sims was unaware of the New Idea article until the Sunday Herald Sun called him this week.
Ms Kilpatrick did not return calls.
