Recovering ... Rene Rivkin was reportedly admitted on Thursday.Rivkin 'suicide attempt'September 03, 2004
RENE Rivkin's weight has been credited with saving his life after the former financier took a drug overdose overnight.Rivkin, who is heavily built, was admitted to Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital after what his lawyer Greg Walsh described as a "very serious attempt" to take his own life.
He was in a stable condition today, a hospital spokesman said.
Mr Walsh said the suicide attempt using prescription medication had almost killed Rivkin.
"It was a very serious attempt and but for his body weight, he would have been successful," Mr Walsh said.
"If he was of a lesser weight he would have killed himself."
Mr Walsh said he understood Rivkin's family had contacted his doctor, Professor Ron Penney, last night.
"He's in a stable condition at the moment but obviously it's a stressful situation," Mr Walsh said.
Rivkin, who is still serving weekend detention after being convicted of insider trading, was last month banned permanently by the corporate regulator from providing any financial services.
He was sentenced to nine months of weekend detention in May last year and collapsed in his cell on the first weekend.
A series of medical certificates and brain surgery kept him out of jail until February this year when he was ordered back to period detention by the NSW Corrective Services department.
As well as undergoing surgery for a series of benign brain tumours, Rivkin also was treated for deep vein thrombosis and extreme depression.
Corrective Services Commissioner Ron Woodham said Rivkin would not attend periodic detention this weekend.
"Doctors informed the Department of Corrective Services this morning that Rivkin has been admitted to St Vincent's Hospital and therefore will not be able to present himself this afternoon for periodic detention," Mr Woodham said in a statement.
He said the department would stay in contact with doctors to monitor Rivkin's condition.
