Like this is a huge surprise!!

SCIENCE has finally confirmed what women have long suspected - when it comes to coping with pain, they are tougher than men.A Deakin University study of 100 patients recovering from cardiac surgery revealed women needed lower doses of painkillers for shorter periods of time.
Mari Botti, chairwoman of nursing at the Epworth Hospital/Deakin University Clinical Research Centre, said that on average women needed morphine for 12 hours, while men kept taking it for 17 hours, and at higher dosages.
"Men tend to peak early with their pain, and then it decreases as you would expect after a few days, whereas women tend to have constant pain for longer," she said.
Professor Botti said the study indicated that even though men and women might feel the same pain, either women were more prepared to put up with it, or perhaps doctors and nurses simply believed women needed less help coping with it.

"It could well be that women are more accepting of pain, or there could be an expectation that they are, so they get less pain relief."
Professor Botti said more research was needed to determine if women were less likely to complain about pain or if the medical profession had developed a form of gender bias in the way they allocated pain relief.
She said pain was not well managed in hospitals, and clinicians hoped that with a better understanding of how pain is experienced, they could develop ways to educate patients about how to describe their level of discomfort.

When I was in hospital after an operation several years ago, I was practically forced to have pain relief thatg I didn't want or need. Mind you, women are definitely tougher - they go through child-birth! Could you imagine a man putting up with that? lol
